Yoga Teacher Or Yoga Therapist?

Yoga Therapy Takes A Holistic Approach

Yoga therapy takes a whole-body approach to yoga that starts with assessing each person’s overall health and working with any limitations that are present. Individual assessments are key, since two people with similar conditions could have very different medical histories or complicating factors that would require different courses of treatment.

Can yoga therapy be taught in group classes? I say yes, to some degree. I teach therapy in my Yum Yum Yoga class, where I ask the students to describe their problems. The list usually includes low back pain, tight neck and shoulders, and hip tightness.

Can I teach a general therapeutic class covering these areas? Yes. Will I be able to help each and every student with what might be causing this continual problem? Probably not.

These are broad brush strokes using yoga as a therapeutic tool. Many who find relief are amazed and they begin to gather postures or posture flows that release their tightness. The wise students that truly want their health back take these pearls home and use them between classes to help their problem areas. Pranayama: Sahaja, Dirgha, Nadi Shodhana propping the elbow up to bring more ease.

Opening the neck and shoulders then adding in the eyes.  We so often forget to excercise the muscles of the eyes. Shoulder joint flow, then to the back to fingers in the sand, hip side stretch, hip rotations, leg stretch, cradle, reclined butterfly. Roll up, aromatherapy and Savasana.

Opening the shoulders. Wed 530 Fundamentals Hatha 146

Pranayama: Sahaja, Dirgha over 2 blocks to allow the shoulders to drop off the front of the body.

Fingers in the sand, 1/4 dog, 1/2 dog, downward facing dog, thread the needle, toe stretch, trap squeeze.  Shoulder rolls, chest expansion, walking fingers up the wall. Half cowface pose, eagle arms, standing chest expansion, wall dog.  Eric Schiffman shoulder openers using strap. Aromatherapy, goal post arms and rocking legs, Savasana

Pranayama: Sahaja, Dirgha over 2 blocks

Supine twist, cradle work, hip rotations, can can, roll like a ball, reverse table, cat rolls.  Swan to downward dog, runner type hip opener, 1/2 hanuman.  Penguin, frog, tortoise, easy seat pelvis stretch, hamstring stretches with strap, happy baby, supine crossed leg twist.

Silky stretches and restorative love for yourself. Wed 7pm Yum Yum

Pranayama over 2 blocks or blanket to feel the flow of the breath.

 Supine to leg lifts and gentle stretches for the legs, hip side stretch with sandbags. Rolling up and moving into supported child with sandbags on back to center inward.  Rocking of the legs to one side then adding in arm to sustain the stretch, other side. Soft and smooth. Cobbler with blocks.  Queens pose with lots of supports for longer meditation.

Yummy wall work and gentle relaxation. Wed 7pm Yum Yum

Pranayama:  Legs resting over seat of chair breath is full and deep.

Moving into a few gentle stretches and then to the wall for gentle warrior series to gently unwind the back. Gentle supported twists and forward folds before a long guided meditation. Savasana.

Yummy sun breath between postures to relax the mind. Mon 530 Yum Yum

Pranayama over folded blanket to relax the shoulders and open then chest. Sahaja, Dirgha, Box

Sun breath supine will be the link between all postures tonight. Bridge, chin nod, table top knees, reclined tree, reclined cobbler, supine twist, lumbar stretch, 1/2 locust, cat rolls, pelvis leveler, neck rolls, aromatherapy and Savasana

Massaging the muscles of the eyes. Mon 7pm Yum Yum

Prananyama: Sahaja, Dirgha, Nadi Shodhana resting arm for ease.

wrist rolls, shoulder rolls, stretching the neck, half circles with neck, trap squeeze. Eye movements, arm movements to free the joints in the arms and shoulders.  Supine fingers in the sand, bridge rolls, hip side stretch, hip rotations, cradle stretch. Aromatherapy, cobbler rolls, Savasana.

Ease in movement for busy people. Wed 7pm Yum Yum

Pranayama: seated in chair Sahaja, Dirgha, Nadi Shodhana

Tonight will be yoga in a chair to fine easy movement and awareness in the body. Pelvic rolls, seated hip drop, pelvis rock the clock, hug yourself back and side openers.  Sit to stand with a twist, supine hip/leg slides, head rolls, aromatherapy and Savasana

Opening the heart to all. Mon 7pm Yum Yum

Pranayama: Sahaja, Dirgha, Nadi Shodhana

This gentle class tonight will start with pranayama over a folded blanket and allow us to really focus on the breath.  Gentle stretches and heart opening movements. Aromatherapy, Savasana in queens pose.  Guided meta meditation.
